SUMMARY:'Dorset Dawdle - 'Following the Hardy Trail'
DESCRIPTION:This first Dawdle will take place on Sunday 06 September and is being sub-titled ‘Following the Hardy Trail’. It will visit towns\, villages and other locations that appear in many of Dorset author Thomas Hardy’s famous Wessex novels such as Tess of the D’Urbervilles\, The Mayor of Casterbridge\, Return of the Native and Far from the Madding Crowd. \n\n\n\nThomas Hardy\n\n\n\nIt will also include Hardy’s birthplace\, the villages he grew up in and around and his cottage which is now run by the National Trust (admission not included). The route book will feature extensive notes to explain the significance of the locations and where they appear in the classic works by the Victorian novelist and poet. \n\n\n\nStart and finish point will be the club’s regular meeting place\, the Hamworthy Club at Canford Magna near Wimborne where there will be reserved parking – there will be the optional extra of pre-booking breakfast baps before starting the road run. \n\n\n\nAfter signing-in cars will set off at regular intervals on a leisurely circular journey that will take them west into the heart of Hardy Country\, passing the county town of Dorchester (the fictional Casterbridge in the Hardy novels) before returning to Wimborne. Participants will be given information on varying refreshment stops along the way but there is no formal lunch venue being arranged. \n\n\n\nOn the return to the Hamworthy Club everyone will be able to enjoy a traditional Dorset Cream Tea (included in the entry fee). The venue will also be the base for 1020’s popular attractions such as a grand tombola\, jigsaw sales and a hamper draw. All profits are going to the club’s two charities Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and Macmillan Caring Locally – it is hoped that both will be in attendance on the day. \n\n\n\nEntry fee will be £35 for a car and two occupants or £27.50p for a car and driver only. This will include a rally plate\, route book / event programme\, finisher’s certificate and the Dorset Cream Tea. The optional breakfast baps with a hot drink can be pre-ordered for £6 a head. \n\n\n\nWe plan to make a weekend option of this event for those who wish to have the Saturday touring the area and join the Dorset Dawdle on the Sunday. More to follow\, but if you would be interested in the weekend\, please let Andy know.

We hope to visit the Club HQ and/or the Abingdon Museum\, which has an MG room including the last MGB Roadster produced. Abingdon itself lies on the River Thames. An historic market town\, with plenty of cafes to stop for a coffee\, riverside walks and Medieval Abbey gardens.    \n\n\n\nAbingdon Museum displays the last MGB Roadster produced\n\n\n\nAbingdon – the oldest continuously inhabited town in England\n\n\n\nFrom Abingdon there will be a short drive to Didcot and a visit to the Didcot Railway Centre.  A railway museum and preservation engineering site covering 21 acres. The site was formerly a Great Western Railway engine shed and locomotive stabling point. There are three short lengths of running track\, each with a station at both ends.  Locomotives\, rolling stock\, Brunel’s “Atmospheric Pipe”\, a signalling centre and air raid shelter are just a few of the things to see.   \n\n\n\nDidcot Railway Centre\n\n\n\nFor anyone wanting refreshments onsite\, The Engine Shed has food available including a range of pasties\, sausage rolls\, jacket potatoes\, sandwiches\, cakes and snacks. (Hot food served until approx 2pm)\,   \n\n\n\nAfter our visit to the Didcot Railway Centre you are free to explore the area further or head back home on a route of your choice.  \n\n\n\nTour Costs \n\n\n\nThis will range from £454.00 to £524.00 for double occupancy and £345.00 to £415.00 for single occupancy depending on room type.
