The Shetlands Isles Run
25th September 2022 @ 8:00 am – 2nd October 2022 @ 5:00 pm
September is unquestionably the best time to visit Scotland; the heather is at its best, the crisp mornings are usually fresh with blue skies, the tourists are all going home and the Aurora Borealis may be seen shortly after dusk on a clear night. Accordingly, ‘Bessie’ (my MGTF Le500) and I are off to The Shetland Isles on Sunday 25th September, returning a week later.
This is not an official Chichester MGOC tour but a run for those who enjoy stretching the legs of their MGs or Classics on empty roads though splendid scenery. Like-minded club members are invited to come along. The plan is a fast two day run from the South Coast up the M40 & M6 to the Scottish Borders and through central Scotland, catch a ferry over to and spend a day on The Orkney Islands, and then catch a ferry up to and spend three days on the Shetland Isles visiting the most northerly point of the British Isles, where conveniently there is a ‘Distillery’ for a little shopping and a photo-shoot. Also a visit to ‘The Scara Brae Stones’ and ‘The Jarlshof Prehistoric Site’ is a must.
The return journey involves a ferry to Aberdeen and a two day home run back through the Scottish Borders. However, those joining us can pace themselves and car by taking a more leisurely drive on the way north and again on the way south with additional nights out in locations of their choice. Possible visits include Dundee to see Captain Scott’s RRS Discovery and a stop at Pickering to visit ‘Bangers & Cash/Derek Mathewson Auctions’ and ‘Classic & Sports Cars’ prestigious showroom.
