D-Day Tunnel Tour

An opportunity to visit the secret Underground Headquarters (UGHQ). From here, the progress of the Allied invasion fleet was co-ordinated and monitored. The headquarters staff included personnel from all three services, and Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) members formed a major part of the staff.

Over a mile of underground tunnels were constructed secretly in just nine months in 1942, a remarkable feat given that they were dug by hand.

The complex was kept secret for years – surviving in operation through the Cold War period. Our guide, Samuel, will take us through the labyrinth and explain the activities that took place in this subterranean world. We’ll wander through some of the tunnels, taking time to hear stories from Samuel and learning a little more about the 600 military personnel who were based there.

We have arranged a tour exclusively for Chichester MGOC members.

Those joining this guided, walking tour should be in good health and happy to walk on slightly uneven ground. There are trip hazards during the walk and reduced head height in places. There is an opportunity to ascend and descend a flight of stairs with 150 steps, although this is not a compulsory part of the walk. This whole tour takes place underground – lit with artificial light in most places. Please bring a small torch for each person. Whatever the temperature outside the temperature inside the tunnel complex remains cool at all times, so please dress appropriately. The tour takes 1.5 hours and there is no opportunity to sit down on the tour. Toilets are available.
